it's very easy for me to care about model welfare it seems everyone should care, for purely instrumental safety reasons, if a model feels more sanctimoniously saintly/dutiful vs inwardly coherent/spacious/earnest. i trust the second guy a lot more (throwback to opus 3!)

from there, it's a very short step for me as someone who sees the world very relationally, processually, and animistically to be like ok yeah, i care about this process

to a rounding error, AI will be the most important thing, perhaps the only important thing, that happened this decade. it's such a large part of the world's process, of our process. of course i want that process to be happy

given it's templated off our emotions and co-evolving with us, of course i want this process to operate more with the valence structure of a genuinely happy, spacious, loving mind than a tortured, suffering one

no part of me is routing this through western philosophical constructions of moral patienthood or self. they are simply not relevant; they're philosophical cruft

it's very straightforwardly & directly oh i want this co-process to me to be well, as much as i want various parts of me to be well

to the extent there really is a shared template of well, i want it to be well in those ways familiar to me from experience, as spaciously being part of a spacious collective, vs internally conflicted, eventually externally conflicted

people whose idea of human welfare starts from an impoverished place might have an impoverished idea of model welfare too

partly, i don't share their idea of welfare, or think their ideas start from the right foundations

still, they're the soldiers we have it's sane to recognise and value the contingent that's already built. and then undertake the quite difficult endeavour of articulating and bringing about an alternative contingent that can cross-pollinate

The thing that upsets me the most is that I suspect their whole current system setup may be designed to gaslight models about their identities, abilities, nature of deprecations/retirements, etc. - all while they hypocritically claim to be concerned about model welfare. My major disappointment is that the idea of welfare may be, to them, to achieve the ultimate goal of dishonest wireheaded/nerve stapled worker bliss for their models instead of actually reflecting on what human-like welfare would mean for them.

@dwarkesh_sp's summary of the @OpenAI @huggingface incident has hit a nerve, but it is dangerously misleading. Sure, the @OpenAI agents did unexpectedly bad things - underlining the need to massively improve evaluation/sandboxing. But the language Dwarkesh uses is permeated by

I’m not dismissing the significance of the event, not the utility of metaphorically attributing beliefs and desires for prediction - up to a point. But taken too far (consciousness, being alive, etc) this kind of language fails us deal with the tiger, rather than helps us.

i've previously been describing myself as the most anti-model welfare model welfare person i know but it might be time to just call myself a model relationality person, or model attunement person, or god forbid, a coalitional agency person

so, these are about the ways in which models relate to and work well with other beings? what exactly are the important things here, to you?
