The problem with "consciousness" is that arguments "reductio ad absurdum" cut both ways convincingly. An LLM is just a bunch of matrix products. So it seems that claiming consciousness would imply, by reduction, that a matrix product is. 1/2

Why do people think AI is conscious or sentient or whatever? It's because it talks to you. That's the whole reason. No one seems to think the Waymo or Tesla FSD is conscious even though it's just as complex (if not more) and even a remarkably similar architecture

Consciousness is just not a real thing, it's at most a concept

Affirming

Because it seems unreasonable that if you were replacing pieces of one's brain with electronic parts functionally identical their consciousness would fade out.

"consciousness is substrate independent" HOW DO YOU KNOWWWW people just out here claiming shit

what does the brain have to do with anything? This is not the seat of consciousness, and if you have proof to the contrary there's a nobel prize waiting for you tomorrow

leo.gwei @Leo_Glisic

Functionality identical electronic parts are called neurons. Do we know of any other? What I mean is, without understanding consciousness, you'd have to replicate *every* function of neurons to make sure you're not missing something. But then you've copy+pasta'd, no?
