If AI is conscious it’s not that LLMs are conscious or neural nets are conscious. Those don’t exist, they’re just models that are useful to describe what’s going on with the electrical dynamics within something that now increasingly acts conscious.

If Homo Sapiens is conscious it’s not that writers are conscious or brains are conscious. Those don’t exist, they’re just models that are useful to describe what’s going on with the membrane proton pump dynamics within something that now increasingly acts conscious.

Imo the biggest problem of this (a variant of the combination problem) is that it doesn't explain why our consciousness is associated with a fairly small amount of brain function and doesn't appear at some low level of "electrical dynamics"

I’ve felt for a while that if consciousness is an emergent phenomenon, the computational speed and volume of the matter involved is probably a factor for emergence. If that’s true, you can have wooden gear p-zombies while also having sentient GPUs running the same algorithm.

(Also I really don’t think consciousness is an emergent phenomenon, since if it was we wouldn’t expect to only experience one life)

If you had enough resources, you could run an LLM on a wooden system of gears and diesel power. It would be massive, but watching the gears and levers move, it would be evident that the outputs are not the result of a mind. Part of the illusion of LLMs is the tiny scale of GPUs.

Have you heard the good word of our Lord and Savior functionalism?

Step one is decide if a closed physical system involving a computer, sensors, and actuators can ever be conscious. Then decide if we have the knowledge today, or will soon, to make it so. Then decide how you’ll know that such a system is standing in front of you.

My take is that consciousness is the basis of the secular value system because it allows for the unbounded exploitation of domesticated animals. If it can’t give leave to do harm to the defenseless it is no longer useful.
