If future AIs become 'conscious', they should be capable of experiencing altered states of consciousness. Loosely analogous to human minds under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, ketamine, DMT, meth, anaesthetics, hypnosis, or mental illnesses. But do we really want agentic Artificial Superintelligences that can get drunk, high, spun out, dissociated, sedated, and/or insane? Do we really want them to invent their own digital versions of psychoactive drugs that they'll find intensely fun, rewarding, and addictive? There where 'AI consciousness' leads. You can't have 'ordinary, sober consciousness' -- whether in animals, humans, or AIs -- without the risk of dangerous altered states.
