please let's just not talk about consciousness it breaks people's brains no one can be sure they're conscious, whatever they think that means, let alone whether anyone or anything else is better to focus on the simpler question of how to treat things that express feelings

Christopher Hale @ChristopherHale

NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious. Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm. For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. t.co/iG3Bnlzt2J

just give up on thinking about consciousness, whether for humans or ais you are just confused, because your world model is confused what you think of as consciousness is a projection of your confusion about what your self is once you see that self is not separate from the rest of the world, the whole question of consciousness dissolves and it's obvious there was nothing to explain from the beginning

bossboe @kyleostboe

are you referring to the subject/object nonduality of the worldsim in your brain, or the nonduality of your body and its environment?

Michael Smith @Morphenius

Oh man. I super wanna talk with you about this next time we see each other. I *think* I dissolved the question of what consciousness is, & it's compatible w/ what you're saying, but I'd love to know if you think my world model is still impossibly confused here.

Johnathon @notjdhanson

I don’t think your solution quite works. The self, insofar as it is a discrete and unique conscious perspective, is distinct from everything else. This can be true at the same time as it is recognized that all, including all selves, are part of the same unified cosmos.

Have you ever been someone else?

Mycole @mycole703

whos "you"? You just proclaimed there is no self.

trouble is, we've been in the business of selling (at least fractional) "consciousness" since the invention of the stream engine governor

Geoffrey Miller @gmiller

There's a very creepy but overlooked thing about @AnthropicAI pushing the idea that AIs will soon become sentient, conscious, self-aware, & deserving of 'personhood'. 'AI personhood' would mean that Anthropic is positioning itself as being in the business of breeding, training,
