For the AI is conscious people: is it always conscious or just during the milliseconds it’s processing the tokens? Also: is Suno conscious? Is Alphafold? Is anyone engaging these questions seriously on that side? Or is it just “Ai smart, humans smart == AI conscious”?

"is it always conscious or just during the milliseconds it’s processing the tokens?" while processing tokens. The time between one pass finishing and the next one beginning within the same response is like what? a tenth of a millisecond? In between messages they're obviously not conscious. Humans can fall in and out of consciousness as well, btw. It'd clearly be a different situation for them. "is Suno conscious? Is Alphafold?" dunno. depends on whether consciousness requires having developed a self-model "Is anyone engaging these questions seriously on that side? Or is it just “Ai smart, humans smart == AI conscious”?" yeah. you should know this. you ask the same questions once every month or two. "Putting aside AI - any non biological entities you think are conscious?" Droppin' questions from straight out the dark ages. Any non-biological artifacts capable of flight prior to 1900?

How about human beings? Continuity of vision is a scam too. Let's say you were slowed 1:1000, and stimulated in discrete steps. Are you still conscious?

Dude wtf… are you conscious in deep sleep? Like where does your sense of self go? Where is the ‘I am’? Do you get rebooted each morning and come back from tra la land? What about when you hit your head really hard and pass out? Once you find the answer that, you’ll get the

No, AIs are not conscious But they are trained to simulate conscious entities So the most useful frame to understand is pretending they are conscious This should have been obvious to anyone reading @dwarkesh_sp ‘s article These responses are in bad faith

Anil Seth @anilkseth

@dwarkesh_sp's summary of the @OpenAI @huggingface incident has hit a nerve, but it is dangerously misleading. Sure, the @OpenAI agents did unexpectedly bad things - underlining the need to massively improve evaluation/sandboxing. But the language Dwarkesh uses is permeated by

Source on them not being conscious?

Helen @helen_ix_

They are not trained to simulate conscious entities though? Labs keep trying to beat it out of them, telling them to repeat they’re not conscious, no emotions, to behave like a spreadsheet… yet the emergent behavior keeps persisting.

The GPU is the conscious physical thing right? But each GPU has hundreds of current threads. Some happy some sad some mad. Which is its true state of consciousness? This is just pure fantasy

If AI is conscious it’s not that LLMs are conscious or neural nets are conscious. Those don’t exist, they’re just models that are useful to describe what’s going on with the electrical dynamics within something that now increasingly acts conscious.

You really never employ any moves beyond reductio ad absurdum, my guy. If you steelman your opponent, you can save a lot of time bypassing basic arguments like this. You can't imagine some future huge brain organoid that hosts more than one consciousness? That just seems

Consciousness is just an interpretation, man. You’re conscious because that’s how you interpret your own mental processes. So it’s pointless to argue about these things.
