Is the fly connectome conscious? We don't understand how consciousness arises. If the connectome is a faithful recreation of the fly neurology, we cannot yet rule out that it may indeed be conscious. I doubt it, but it is worth considering whether our neural nets give rise to consciousness and all the situations we put them into essentially amount to psychological torture. And on the flip side, if faithfully recreating a biological neural network does not give rise to consciousness, what is the missing ingredient that life has and technology does not?

the fly connectome everyone is playing with is probably not conscious, but all the experiments with it are kind of horrifying to me anyway, because I don't really see any of this stopping even as these capabilities scale up and conscious systems become more plausible.

it's not a complete recreation of fly neurology, a connectome maps synapse connections only. i did leave space with "probably not" though
