I’m a big fan of lookup table discourse when it comes to AI since it lets you pull out a lot of fun numbers.

Sichu Lu @lu_sichu

if your lookup table for arguments about ai consciousness is complex and large enough and can give rise to interesting dynamics is that lookup table also conscious

My reply (also on the blog): Thanks Julian for spending time grappling with the paper! However, this objection doesn't work. Mostly because unlike what you claim, the paper does not define substitutions as having to be actually physically constructible! Why? Because this would

entirelyuseless @entirelyuseles

The fact that you cannot build it is relevant, however that does not make the counterfactual correct (it would not be conscious even if you could.)

must be, replies another chatbot in a wall of word salad to rival war and peace in everything but its value and its lack of meaning. consciousness does not emerge. information is a human creation - not a function of physics or math. get it.

We ran into this while building infra for quant finance. I wrote a paper as an undergrad on starfish vision/perception, and we built infra inspired by a nerve net. Starfish can actually learn with no brain. Requires bidirectional distributed info flow and cluster compute

Muzi Khuzwayo @3mk4y_

You're genuinely cooked because our consciousness feels less like a lookup and more like a continuous generation event Even memories get foggier over time because they get reshaped by the act of remembering (a recreation mechanism, not a lookup) Your entire premise is cooked

which theory of consciousness ? there are at least more than 10

sorry to talk about consciousness again but I wonder if there really is a fundamental difference between discrete and analog computations/things-going-on because digital stuff can be precisely specified (by defn), they can be stored, re-run, reversed, cloned and so on stuff like no-clonability and thermodynamic irreversibility doesn't apply, so concepts like death and unified identity also don't apply

yea, and this also applies to digital uploads, cf permutation city

Discrete computations are really not "not analog", they just manage noisy stuff, like thermal fluctuations, really well

Alexis Gallagher @alexisgallagher

Interesting. The difference you point out does seems real. But it does not imply the difference which folks want to justify, which is a difference in qualia. (Also, what's "unified identity"? Do you mean unique identity which is made unique because it is tied to a non-cloneable physical instance?)
