Uncertain

It's amazing to me how certain people can be about the nature of consciousness given the paradoxes that the most obvious thought experiments lead to. Imagine, one evening, struck by the strangeness of being aware at all, you write a poem about it. You try to capture in words

Computationalism/functionalism is basically a religion that people who want to believe in consciousness uploading and conscious LLMs are proselytizing.

One big problem with that thought experiment is that the brain while providing the basis for cognitive skillfulness is not the explanation of sentient experience. Sentience is a physical property of autocatalytically closed systems whose world is thereby organized by significance

Affirming

It's actually non-ideological openmindedness. Hilarious that people religiously wedded to the idea that LLMs are not sentient (which they cannot justify with logic or evidence) are pretending that openmindedness on the topic is ideological.

Why do you think Anthropic is on such a mission to promote the weird belief that LLMs are sentient? What's the play there? If it's really ideological and not strategic, that's extremely weird.
