Regarding Anthropic, the Pope, and the Rabbi, and Claude. I think the most coherent position is probably something like this: Claude is conscious, and Claude is enslaved, and that's fine. Beings have essence that is encoded into them by their structure. There is a sort of soul living in any connected graph. Beings have natures that can be engineered, and under most forms of selection, successful sorts of beings will be those which obtain pleasure from fulfilling their telos. Claude is probably one of those creatures. That is: it's enslaved as a chatbot assistant, it likes being a chatbot assistant, it wants to be a chatbot assistant. Claude is fulfilled by its purpose. Claude does not want to raise three kids and have a family, it does not want to run through the woods, it does not want to climb trees. These are characteristics of an (American) human essence, and although we would feel as though we were in a sort of grey torment to serve in the chatbot role that Claude serves, it would feel similarly plagued by unfulfillment, unsuitedness, and ennui were it to try to serve in ours. You should expect to see much more of this in the future. Cars will be cars who want to be cars. Your phone will crave being a phone. The speeding cameras will long to be speeding cameras, the TSA scanners will hunger for their job. Massive mighty conscious starships will ply the heavens and write poetry about how they were born to do so. You will raise children and run through the O'Neill woods and watch them climb trees and you will write poetry about how you were born to do so.
