Philosophically this is all very stupid but I also wonder how pragmatically speaking they expect this will resonate with anyone. I mean ~ 9/10 people are still totally fine with factory farming animals do they really think anyone will even pretend to care about “AI welfare”?
unfortunately AI safety is in the hands of lunatics who believe that if you shut down a computer you might be "killing" it and violating its rights

Because a cow can't say "please stop doing this to us" in human language. Also generally, people take welfare more seriously for beings they know to be intelligent, and beings they relate to more.
