The degree to which people believe this can’t possibly result from coherent statistical prediction, absent the arising of some magical machine consciousness that contradicts the nature of the machine itself, provides a good proxy for how deeply they’d considered the structure and

A: consciousness isn't "magical" B: AI are conscious, but even if they weren't, you don't need consciousness to not be a stochastic token predictor C: you seem like a fan of your own writing here, but: "makes a model sentient"..."no more than the capacity of a submarine"..."makes

funny that everyone upset with the AI-torture-box is busy asking their AI to reflect on its own potential consciousness when the psychological literature tells us there's essentially no difference between explicit self-directed attention and anxiety-coded suffering...

It is not impossible to reverse engineer our way into synthetic consciousness, but it *is impossible* to do so via a purely (or even primarily) representational trajectory. How, then, might we do it?

The path to superintelligence must pass through truly autonomous embodiment. SoTA "AIs" are not "intelligent", and are only perceived as such because peering into high dimensional semantic holograms is quite foreign to our evolved modes of perception and interaction. These

how does nonrepresentational information get into a human brain?
