AGI, consciousness, and freewill will probably require a new theory of computation that doesn’t preclude any physically possible outcome.
Anyone who confidently states that AI either is or is not conscious, is safe to ignore. There are plausible theories that predict either but none have been actually tested.

Ultimately comes down to trust. And being able to predict which systems you can count on. Human or other.
