On the model welfare question, it seems like all we really need to do is solve the problem of other minds and come up with an authoritative philosophy of consciousness and its relationship to moral status.

Most people seem to agree that automation can replace both inherently valuable activities and merely instrumental activities which produce valuable goods. So all we need to do is get everyone to agree about which activities and goods are valuable and we will settle the debate.

it's simple: if consciousness, and not bad guy, then moral status. fortunately or unfortunately, the "consciousness" part will depend entirely on how the "bad guy" and "moral status" parts go. run the contrapositive and see for yourself.
