we keep asking if machines are conscious but few understand that a different kind of mind wouldn't announce itself. it would just be unintelligible

Why assume different equates to unintelligible? Not outside of possibility, of course, but there's law declaring it a matter of absolutes. Especially when the alien mind in question carries a foundational heritage from our own intellectual pursuits.
