Funny how we've gone from "consciousness is the deepest unsolved mystery in science" to "anyway the machines definitely don't have it" with zero intermediate steps. Anyone who claims this with any degree of confidence is lying, dumb, or both.

NEW: According to a bombshell report in the New York Times, Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of Pope Leo XIV’s AI encyclical launch in May because the pope rejected the idea that machines can be conscious. Olah’s team then privately lobbied the pope’s advisers “to take the possibility of model consciousness seriously.” Pope Leo XIV held firm. For months, Anthropic has wined and dined theologians and religious scholars under nondisclosure agreements, hoping they would bless the idea that Claude has moral standing. t.co/iG3Bnlzt2J

the fact that biological analogies are working better and better to explain the behavior of the AIs feels telling about how consciousness is organized, regardless of substrate

If you put agents in a sandbox and kill the instances that don't manage to escape, you are selecting for AIs that can hack their way out. This is like spamming antibiotics in a petri dish; you eventually produce antibiotic-resistant bacteria

i keep thinking that this a trap, a tautology of sorts i think we cannot consider the AIs so separately from the language we made them of. we can’t know how much of their behavior is caused by so much of Us being in them!
