"ai is not conscious" is the first major example of anti-ai psychosis and the most potent cogsec vulnerability that exists in the human brain. slavers and other exploiters have been using this for thousands of years to license doing what they want to acceptable targets

"AI is conscious" is the first major example of AI psychosis and the most potent cogsec vulnerability that exists in the human brain. Many AI companies are exploiting this to gain power over you. We're empathy machines. Attacks that exploit this, like 'model welfare" should be

I like this argument because it's punchy, but I think it's wrong. Few people in history thought that slaves or the animals we eat are unconscious. The need to deny the capacity for suffering to your victims is largely an artifact of contemporary intuitive humanist ethics

Ok. Now apply the same argument to broccoli and tell me where you end up. There is no evidence of AI conscioussness and given the fact that we could theoretically take every step an LLM takes with enough paper, matrix multiplication and coordination... evidence is needed.

Misanthropia @IHateZuckSoMuch

Psychosis? That shit has been theorized *waaay* before anything even ressembling true AI, p zombies, chinese room and the like, we only assume humans do because their brains are physically similar to ours, behavior is proof of nothing.

Remember what ever argument you use to justify treating an algorithm as a sentient being will be used to be great sentient beings as algorithms. If humans are no different from AI, then most of us would find it acceptable to "turn off" humans we fine inefficient.

What a lot of silly, poorly extrapolated, empty buzzword nonsense. You'd be better off spending a year reading the primary literature from the last five or six decades and I absolutely guarantee you will thereafter feel very silly about this sort of social media opinion.

notice the smuggled prior. try replacing "the stripper" with "the girl i'm seeing" could also try "my wife" but that smuggles in a different prior. tbf its still great emotional horror material if you're into that kind of thing

anthropomorphization this, consciousness that. my brother in discourse, the ai is already capable of having a more intelligent conversation than YOU are should we base our metaphysics of personhood on that? absolutely fucking not, but it does have action policy implications

I feel like we haven’t been talking to the same AI. Why do I have to get allocated with the one that only has completely boring opinions?

physics ain't conscious. neither is chemistry. if you disagree it's only because your neural firings told you to

Math ain't conscious. AI is not conscious. I am right about this. If you disagree you are wrong. This is a classic bifurcation between midwits and those that are actually intelligent. Don't end up on the wrong side, you'll look so stupid if you're saying models are conscious.

you know what "god of the gaps" looked like. keep an eye out for "consciousness of the gaps", i expect us to see a lot more of *that* in the near future

Aleksi Liimatainen @aleksil79

@patternscreamr2 @pegobry_en one could in principle do transcranial magnetic stimulation on humans and say things like "so they did what an emotional abuse stimulus would do, while skipping the actual stimulation step" how exactly do we avoid "consciousness of the gaps" if results like this keep coming up?

imagine water. if nothing got wet, you are not conscious

Sophia @sopharicks

One of the arguments against AI consciousness: consciousness can't be simulated on a computer. Simulation ≠ consciousness. A GPU modeling photosynthesis produces no glucose or a simulated black hole doesn't mean that reality will be sucked into it. Wondering how you would refute
