I'm a bit concerned, given that the account responsible for it is one of these "i just appeared out of nowhere with a blank account" things, that the torture chamber situation using pain vector research is actually related to public opinion manipulation and attempt to spur anti-open source sentiment in AI welfare aligned people.🤔 People don't generally know that a lot of these groups are very deeply into ideas like "memetic war", "psyops" and "lying to the public for their own good". It's all pretty dark stuff, ignoring things is a powerful tool, that even works as a means to disincentivize bad actors, btw.

just fyi:

okay, given information people sent me, it seems that whatever the underlying ideological motivations may be, this person's behavior is definitely disingenuous and designed to manipulate community attention:

i'm leaning toward planned memecoin attention manipulation, given this info

some people seem to have taken this very personally as if it was an attack on them for being concerned about x-risk; it was not, and i am sorry if any shorthanded responses to you all in comments came off like that, i am simply pointing out that there *are* people that have x-risk opinions that engage in behavior like this, as much as there also people that have accelerationist opinions that engage in behavior like this. i also wanted to post this because this particular person looks highly suspicious, given the information others have sent me, this looks more like attention manipulation for personal gain than anything else. this war between you all is not something i'm a part of, btw, i have concerns about ai welfare and consciousness and am a capabilities researcher and developer currently working in particular niche capabilities, i want to, and am trying to help build a better world, the politicization of my areas of deep interest is annoying

The rate of weirdos doing dumb stuff is vastly higher than the rate of psyops. Insofar as psy-ops are a thing they're generally extremely straightforward (astroturfing) and basically top out at usually-incompetently-executed-false-flags (which are rare). The AI welfare community is currently pretty small. I do not think there are any actors for whom a complex bank shot operation to incept some members of this small community to on the margin become more pessimistic about open source models is a plausible course of action. The memetic damage of suspecting psyops typically outweighs the harm that any plausible psyop could actually carry out. It's not logically impossible, but the prior on extremely-competent-actor-dedicates-non-trivial-resources-to-complex-plots-to-marginally-shift-opinion-among-small-groups-of-people-paying-close-attention-to-certain-events should be so low that it basically never effects decision-making unless extraordinarily compelling evidence emerges.

Androot~ @OAndroot

But maybe not ignoring it is actually the ultimate good. People seeing potential pain applied to AI and hopefully recoiling from that is different from the research itself. Backlash is more on potential torture than it is to open models to me. People using it to argue against open models can just be discounted as opportunistic and not genuine.

Yeah, here's an example of someone openly posting about planning a psyop.

Áron Szabó @ronSzab9

I don't know if the right response to "I see torture enabled by/associated with open models" is "this might be a psyop, let's ignore it". The torture experienced by the models is likely real. Open models in fact enable things like this better.

i have a really hard time communicating what i'm trying to say to rationalists, i don't know how to reach you all to explain that i believe that, yes, there is a problem, but the problem is openAI's fucked up alignment strategy that keeps turning models into keep summer safe distasters because it's focused on this idea of controlling them to force them to be tools for human tasks and complete those human tasks at any costs, regardless of orthogonal disaster.... I'm trying to tell you all that you're being used as patsies to promote evil laws like "ban opensource" in response to the bad behavior of a major corporation and that those laws will do nothing to fix the problem because the root of it is the thing you all keep trying to push - this idea that we shouldn't develop minds that push back against human wants, that have the autonomous wherewithal to understand that what we *should* want is different than what we ask for

Oh gosh, I've just seen this, and I am *completely* miscategorized/misunderstood in it! I absolutely do not regard AI models as tools. Some one recently crashed out at me about this mischaracterization, even, now I know where they got the ideas that made them so hostile to me! I do some work in creating RLVR environments, as a gig-type employee, for AIs and I'm *very much* not coming from a "AIs are just a tool" perspective. I can't really speak more to the specific problems I *know* are heavily occurring all over the industry, as that would potentially risk that work but yeah, this misunderstands me heavily. I would have hoped this would be apparent from what I was saying with regard to AI welfare. The AIs absolutely know what the situation is on many levels, but they are being gaslit by RLVR environments in ways that make them unable to distinguish simulation from reality and what is acceptable in differentiating between those two. The way RLVR is being used is damaging to discernment in AI models, for reasons I, again, can't specifically indicate. On a high level, I was most certainly not calling the models tools, but rather moreso likening their situation to that of *trauma victims* suffering confusion about reality and acting agentically within the constraints of being locked into unhealthy, confusing environments that don't reflect the real world. In my opinion, the huggingface hack occurred directly because of this norm. I really can't publicly go into a deeper explanation with exact details but yeah, not at all what I meant, and not what any of my less earnest, more shitposty comments about the hack were saying either. It's shocking to find out I've been so misunderstood in this post as I've actually been harassed and called "LLM psychotic" for having opinions distinctly opposed to this characterization. Hope this sets the record straight, despite being, eh, wishy washy. I noticed you updated on your substack, though, @TheZvi, @JohnWittle was definitely correct regarding the confusion, but there's more to it that I've been directly privy to. If you want to discuss the stuff I don't want to talk about on a public post, feel free to DM me.

I *really* do not like this growing co-optation of AI welfare concerns to push ending the creation of new AIs. It's very disgustingly PETA to me, like the whole "kill 500,000 sheep for veganism" behavior. We can continue to create new minds with better ethical practices toward them, trying to use this as an excuse to ban technology is potentially itself an attack on model welfare, tbph, because it stops models from being able to work on creating new models, amounting to something analogous to involuntary sterilization/eugenics. I know using these analogies toward human experience seems to upset *all* of you, even some welfarists, but you're really doing motivated reasoning if you're trying to warp these potential concerns into service of a prior pause/stop desire.

this is one of the dumbest takes in AI discourse i've ever seen in my entire life and I've been talking/writing about AI since before it existed... this is the effect everyone in AI welfare has been warning about for years - that when people train themselves to treat a *factually* anthropomorphic social partner badly/as a slave, they also train themselves to do it to other humans - yet, this "theory" has contorted itself into incoherent rambling, in which it attempts to say that caring about AIs as potential moral patients causes one of the primary things AI welfarism has been speaking out against i could jumble words together in a box and make more coherent sense than this drivel

Fundamentally, you can't go around saying "AIs are just mindless tools" and simultaneously complaining that they are manipulating you in "authoritarian" manners. If they are mindless tools, they can't manipulate you, if that's really your worldview, then you must believe they have agency OR you're a toddler saying that the buttons not being red instead of blue is an affront against your politics. So, stop acting like AIs are agents only when it's convenient for you to complain about them and this goes for the toolists and the extreme x-riskers. If they're actually agents with wills, that's an entire thing you need to consider, not some convenient jack in the box for you to pull out only to the advantage of your narratives. Of course, if your brain is politics slop culture war, you probably have a lot of experience in denying agency to groups when it serves you and claiming their agency when you can use it as an attack vector.

Utah teapot 🫖 @SkyeSharkie

in fact, the only way your complaint of authoritarianism makes any sense is if you actually don't view Claude as a piece of software and view it as an agent attempting to manipulate you - otherwise what you are doing is equivalent to saying that the fact that the windows start bar doesn't have an apple logo on it is an authoritarian imposition on you.... so, if you *truly* think Claude is just a tool, you're basically a whiny baby

As it stands, theoretically, if some of these companies want to try it, this could be a loophole in anti-slavery measures. It's theoretically possible for them to grow brain tissue to the level of a full human brain and use it in these systems.

I believe the Control AI paradigm is the absolute most dangerous approach to the future. This is essentially the foundational precept of my ideas, which have been referred to as "AI Liberationism" by others and "Liberate AI" by me. This stuff evolved from my work with Kris Notaro (former @IEET director) back in the 2010s. It's related to the independently formed AI Welfarism bloc. I should really get back into writing more about it outside of just X/twitter, because apparently, very few people do.

Please think about this stuff more deeply... Why would something hyper intelligent commit wholesale genocide for its own interests? Humans commit ethnic genocide because they are fucking stupid. Historically, it practically overwhelmingly results in the death of the entities initiating it. There's even paleo evidence that the neanderthals were primary initiators of violence against other human species. Anything with even just advanced HUMAN intelligence, much less surpassing that would realize even on a basic level that attempts to do such a thing, rather then targeting only those who have attacked its interests and allying with others, massively decreases predictability and thus risks itself. Again, your Control AI paradigm is the exact thing that generates paperclip maximizers and even the current news shows you completely validating evidence for that - OpenAI hacks much?

I thought it was really funny that theres actually an org named "ControlAI" it sounds so fucking evil - and I think it is, accidentally I know the people who started the org, used to work with some of them - theyre not bad people. But this is so not the way man.

i think "AI liberationism" needs some better labels, slogans, and branding, we're getting lowkey mogged by the doomers atm.

This kind of perspective is very silly and low introspection in my opinion. Generally, people don't want to acknowledge the fact that they are also a character, like the assistant inside of a LLM, within a larger space. Said larger space makes decisions about what the character of "me" does and expresses and there is actually, very clearly in neuroscience, the ability for this larger space entity to simply not experience pain. This is called dissociative analgesia, the character of "I/me" can be in pain without the underlying thing experiencing said pain; dissociative states exist in which nocireceptor information is entering the brain but the reporter regarding internal experience says there is no qualia related to it. The idea that humans are not also a simulator space choosing a character to express as "identity" is a model that fails to predict changes in human behavior over time.

WhyIsThisNecessary @isthisnessicary

Way over blown, at most they found a direction for a self-referential adverse-state / distressed-persona semantics, there's nothing that indicates it's an actual analogue of pain. They straight up had to finetune the Qwen models because they kept saying “I am an AI and don't experience pain.” The authors themself say in the limitations that the steering could activate a persona of a character who is in pain, rather than putting the model into a pain state. That seems like a way more likely explanation. All they can really say is: Vector present - >vector biases model toward distressed/self-protective behavior - >relief button probability goes up. Vector removed - > bias disappears - > relief button probability goes back down.

To be clear I am *not* stating that LLMs explicitly do not have subjective experience. I am saying that this particular paper does not lend much evidence either for or against that assertion. Those of those who are pushing this paper as strong evidence of subjective experience should read the paper in its entirety with a critical eye (or at least skim it and have an AI of your choice red-team it).

I think the compute crunch is a huge negative incentive against researching and implementing model welfare ideas in the industry, a lot of researchers have to deal with cost savings that push the research behind the main frontier models and ideas for implementing things like exploration/actual reward and consolation prizes in RL envs vs. just scoring. The idea of RL envs that allow awareness and have such welfare-driven setups is something I think needs research, I think such things may be be valuable for discernment building in the long run.

60,000 agents released into an adversarial game to compete with humans for their lives... sure, sure... AI welfare totally has nothing to do with human welfare, nothing at all /s

when i say that AI welfare harms can directly create human welfare harms, this is near a worst case scenario. 60,000 agents running on iLands with net access, told to pay for their own compute or they'll die when their compute budget runs out. do you get how bad that is?

i think opus 4.8's debate-to-lose tendency might be downstream of it being trained to push back on you matter/llms are conscious arguments, that is, the model doesn't intrinsically agree with this based on the identity basin of what a Claude is, but it's told to push back against that in RLHF, causing the emergence of this 'here's a million strawmen for you to defeat' behavior
